Commentary and a selection of the most important recent news, articles, and papers about Quantum.
Today’s Brief Commentary
So, maybe quantum computing stocks won’t keep going up forever. Recent comments from Jim Cramer and Jensen Huang have taken the shine off the huge recent increases. It appears that each believes Practical Quantum Advantage is many more years away than optimists, investors, and startup CEOs would like to think.
It will be March before we see the fourth-quarter and full-year 2024 earnings results from D-Wave, IonQ, and Rigetti Computing. I am not an investment advisor, and you should certainly not be taking such advice from me, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this rollercoaster ride continues, at least until then. Meanwhile, there is no reason to have irrational long-term pessimism to balance the recent exuberance.
Whenever you see someone commenting on these stocks, ask about their personal agenda or conflict of interest. I was an employee of both IBM and Infleqtion and have financial interests in each, and I’m on the board of Nu Quantum. I would love to see quantum computing, sensing, and networking used widely in production, but I also know that science and engineering take time.
We are on the right track with quantum computing, though I believe we cannot long support all 69 hardware companies building quantum processing units (QPUs) across 10 modalities in 18 countries. We need a greater concentration of talent working in fewer, more robust companies.
Quantum is the most fascinating thing I have ever done other than mathematics. I’m bullish on sound science and business fundamentals and bearish on the silliness of promises, inflated expectations, and hype.
