Today’s Brief Commentary:
Most of the links today concern financial news regarding earnings announcements of public quantum computing companies or funding of private companies. IonQ and Rigetti Computing have already announced their Q4 and Fiscal Year 2024 results, and I link to my analysis of each. D-Wave announces this week.
There’s also some news about quantum efforts in Italy and Romania. More and more countries are developing sovereign quantum computing plans and programs, even if they only focus on access to the most powerful systems available.
If you are such a country, your industry can be part of a bigger supply chain, provide system access and education to your citizens/students/educators/researchers, or build your own big system to reach Practical Quantum Advantage.
If you plan to build a powerful enough system, that’s your single goal. You should not fund and support many fragmented efforts, hoping they will magically materialize into a unified working system. To use my Apollo space analog from last year, you need to get to the moon and back, not leave spacecraft parts that don’t work and fit together on the launch pad and in orbit.
I’ve been building a database of all things quantum to serve as the basis for my talks, reports, advising, and consulting. The chart above shows the number of companies founded by year since 2000 producing quantum processing units, that is, devices with clusters of qubits. Some, like IBM and Amazon, are not listed because they are older. Does anything surprise you about the chart?
Don’t forget to check out and bookmark my new sortable list of upcoming quantum technology conferences.

QuantWare raises €20 million Series A to power the world’s largest quantum computers
Date: Tuesday, March 4, 2025
Commentary: Congratulations, but more hype about reaching 1 million qubits when its own Contralto-A device has 17 qubits.
Excerpt: QuantWare develops VIO, a technology that allows its customers to create the world’s largest quantum processors (QPUs). VIO solves the scaling bottlenecks that limit the size of QPUs today, allowing users to scale any qubit design and unlocking the fastest path towards quantum computers with more than 1 million qubits in a single processor.

How real researchers are using Qiskit circuit functions | IBM Quantum Computing Blog
https://www.ibm.com/quantum/blog/circuit-function-users
Authors: Suhare Nur; Sanket Panda; Francisco Martin; SheshaShayee Raghunathan; and Robert Davis
Date: Monday, May 5, 2025
Excerpt: We recently spoke with users of three of our circuit functions—Q-CTRL’s Performance Management function, Algorithmiq’s Tensor-network Error Mitigation (TEM) function, and Qedma’s Quantum Error Suppression and Error Mitigation (QESEM) function—to hear about how they’ve been integrating them into their experiments. These conversations made it clear that there is a large community of researchers in fields like physics and chemistry whose research could benefit enormously from quantum computing experimentation, but who themselves lack extensive expertise in quantum hardware performance management.
